Tips #1 Learning The Location

If this is a location shoot, you will probably want to visit the home first, so you can check out the windows and be sure that you will have adequate light. If this is not possible, ask the parents what the lighting is like for the particular time of day that your sitting is scheduled.

Simple Baby Photography Tips For Infants and Newborns

Most of the time photographing a newborn can be challenging and somewhat unpredictable. In this article I’ve listed some useful Baby Photography Tips For Infants And Newborns that can make your sessions go as smoothly as possible.

Tips #1 Learning The Location

If this is a location shoot, you will probably want to visit the home first, so you can check out the windows and be sure that you will have adequate light. If this is not possible, ask the parents what the lighting is like for the particular time of day that your sitting is scheduled.

Tips #2 Discuss The Wardrobe

Discuss with the parents prior to the sitting how they feel about the baby’s wardrobe. You should consider photographing their wrinkly, soft-skinned bodies, so try to encourage the parents to forego the clothing.

They are only an infant for such a short period of time and we want to capture every little part of them! Make sure to remind parents to remove clothes or anything that may leave marks on the baby’s delicate skin approximately 1 hour prior to the sitting. This really helps in post-editing so you won’t be spending all of your time getting rid of sock marks, etc.

Tips #3 Room Temperature

Before the sitting, make sure that the room or location is very warm. Newborns can be very uncooperative when they are cold. I sometimes use a heating pad underneath the backdrop or material that the baby is laying on for extra warmth.

Tips #4 Be Prepared

Be sure to have any props, baby posers, backdrops, etc. ready prior to the sitting. Keep hand sanitizer, clean blankets, paper towels, disinfectant cleaner, baby wipes and tissues handy. Trust me, you will need these things!

Tips #5 Natural Posing

Pose infants in their natural position. It looks awkward and unnatural to see them sitting upright. A beanbag poser is an easy way to pose a baby because it naturally molds around the baby’s body. Not to mention that it is very safe and comfortable for the infant.

Tips #6 Choose The Right Height And Angles

Get down to their level. When you shoot down low at the baby’s level, you are bringing the viewer into the baby’s world vs. standing over the baby and looking down on it. Very often, I lay on the floor on my stomach for some great captures.

Although, most of my time is spent at the baby’s level, it is a good idea to consider other angles. You can also try shooting from a bird’s eye view or from down below the baby’s level to show other interesting perspectives.

Photographing newborns and infants requires a lot of patience. I always allow extra time for these sessions because they can be so unpredictable. Use these tips in your photography sessions and you will be on your way to creating beautiful baby portraits.

It is so important to capture your newly born baby as soon as you can as they change so rapidly in the first few weeks. You might decide to let a professional photographer capture this precious moment for you, or indeed a family member of yourself. Which ever way you choose its important to get it right. I have listed below some key points which I hope will help you.

1. Timing - Choose a time when baby has slept and just had a feed as this is when baby will be best. For newborns it does not matter if they fall asleep as you can create some wonderful artistic shots this way.

2. Light - Look for nice bright space in your home that lets in lots of natural light, this will help you get much softer images, plus you will not need to use the flash, most cheap digital cameras now will let you turn it off.

3. Cropping - Parents love nice close up images of their new baby, to create a good composition try to keep the eyes about a third down from the top of the frame, this will crop the top of the head off but your final image will look better than trying to keep the whole head in.

It is so important to capture your newly born baby as soon as you can as they change so rapidly in the first few weeks. Which ever way you choose its important to get it right. I have listed below some key points which I hope will help you.

1. Timing - Choose a time when baby has slept and just had a feed as this is when baby will be best. For newborns it does not matter if they fall asleep as you can create some wonderful artistic shots this way.

2. Light – Look for nice bright space in your home that lets in lots of natural light, this will help you get much softer images, plus you will not need to use the flash, most cheap digital cameras now will let you turn it off.

3. Cropping – Parents love nice close up images of their new baby, to create a good composition try to keep the eyes about a third down from the top of the frame, this will crop the top of the head off but your final image will look better than trying to keep the whole head in.

4. Positioning – Find a nice big chair of sofa and lay down some of your nice white baby blankets, try to lie baby at a 45 degree angle so you might need some cushions for this. (make sure you do not block out to much light, so have the light source coming towards baby)

5. Attention – Grab a colourful toy or rattle to get baby’s attention, you can use this method to help baby move its own head in to the position you like. So experiment with a few shots with baby not looking directly into the lens.

These are some very easy and basic methods that will hopefully help you capture some images for your album.

This is when it all started…

The general banter went on for a few more weeks, about when I was going to get the images printed, when we were going to sit down and choose the ones we wanted, you get the general idea. A year passed I kid you not, till one day I walked into the photography processing shop and handed the assistant the memory card. I was asked if I wanted to select which ones I wanted printed, I shouted “all of them, just print the lot!” A couple of days past and off I went to collect the images, I got home, we poured a glass of wine and looked through the photographs together, not on a computer, iphone or digital camera just the old fashioned way and it was brilliant funny ones and all!

So enough ranting from me, but here is a little advice. If someone suggests to you to have some professional baby photographs taken, do it, do not hesitate just pay for the experience and in a few weeks time you will have some stunning images of your baby that will last forever, you will be happy, your family will be happy, the whole world will be happy!

When should I schedule my newborn’s portrait session? Newborn babies are best photographed in their first couple of weeks in the world. Some parents like to wait until the belly button heals, and others really want that stage of life captured in a photo, but, since that usually happens during the first two weeks, for once it is possible to please everyone. During those first two weeks a newborn baby sleeps most of the time and in most any place, so getting them to stay still atop a pile of pillows, placed in a basket, or held up in Daddy’s hands is a much simpler task. Right after birth a baby remains kind of curled up in the fetal position, but before the end of the first month, babies begin to stretch out, making it harder to keep them safely in those precious poses. Many professional photographers get booked up to two months ahead of time. To make sure you are able to schedule a session during that small two-week window, it’s a good idea to hire a photographer before you deliver your baby. Besides, once you bring home that bundle of joy, you will be much too busy (and tired) to spend time finding the right photographer. Professional photographers who specialize in child photography understand that babies rarely come on the days they are due. It’s nice if you can give your photographer a heads up if your due date has come and gone, but you are still very pregnant!

What should my newborn wear for the photo session? The short answer is nothing! Newborns are perfect candidates for naked photos! Not only does nakedness highlight their innocence and newness, but also clothing is often ill fitting and tends to overpower the baby and dominate the image.

Why should I hire a professional photographer? I’m taking a million pictures myself. Of course new moms and dads (and grandmas and grandpas and friends) are going to take tons of pictures of your new baby. You will get some fabulous images because you have 24-hour access to an incredibly adorable subject. You should absolutely document all of those special moments, cute faces, and first experiences. Here are some benefits to hiring a professional photographer for your newborn portrait session.

You get to be in the pictures, too! One problem with you taking all of the pictures is that you don’t get to be in the pictures. With newborns, there is a wonderful opportunity for beautifully intimate skin-on-skin portraits (dad kissing baby on the forehead, mom and dad holding baby close, or even tasteful portraits of baby breastfeeding.)

One word: Lighting. Professional photographers know about lighting. When visiting the home of a client, your photographer will likely begin looking for the best places to take the photos using natural light. However, if there is little light available, or if parents have requested a style that requires additional lights, he or she will have them ready, and know how to use them. The flash from a point and shoot camera can provide additional light, but it is often directed straight at the subject and can be too harsh for anyone, let alone a newborn baby.

Experience. When you hire a professional photographer, you are getting the insight and knowledge that he or she has gained from taking pictures of many newborn babies and their families. From previous shoots, we’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, what will translate into an amazing print and what won’t. Professional child photographers know all of the classic newborn portrait shots, and are constantly brainstorming to ensure something unique and fresh for each new family.

Props. Last, in addition to gaining experience from each session, a photographer may also accrue “props,” which he or she will make available to you. Using the items that belong to the baby results in lovely environmental photos that provide that sentimental touch, but using something out of the ordinary like an unusual chair, an antique suitcase or a giant mirror will differentiate your pictures from others, and generally, professional photographers remain on the lookout for those uncommon objects.

Pregnancy and Baby Photographer

***

Every child born has a gift to bring to this earth and every parent has the highest of hopes that their child will grow into a healthy happy and prosperous adult. Every pregnancy is different, some are good and others are tough but no matter what type of pregnancy you have or personality your children will grow into it is very important to every family member to capture those first fleeting moments of your child’s life and the nine months before!

In North America there is a particular style of photography the people seem to associate with pregnancy, that is black and white exposure with the mother fading into the background. This sort of imagery emphasizes the mothers belly and gives the photo a touch of mystery. Lots of people love to have the picture done of their hands in the shape of a heart around the belly button, this is also a popular image to have done with the fathers hands wrapped around the mothers.

Of course during labor the last thing most parents are thinking about are infant photos but I can tell you from experience that it does not take long for the shutter bug urge kicks into high gear. Those first few weeks after you baby is born you will not want to but her down, she is so soft, small and helpless and all you can do is look at her and how perfect she is. This is one of the most important times for parents to have photos done of their new born.

New born photos are often done high key (bright white) to emphasize the baby’s pure state. It is common for the child and the parents to have little to no cloths on in the photos as a symbol of the closeness during this time in a young families life. When choosing a location to do the photographs it is essential that the temperature is warm enough so the infant does not catch a chill. It is very common for photographers to go into peoples homes to do an infant photo shoot where the parents can be completely comfortable (especially for a mother recovering from the trauma of labor) and have everything they need to feed and change baby.

It is well worth the time and money to have a photographer come into your home during your pregnancy and then again soon after the baby is born to have custom photos taken. Some photographers will even have specialized packages priced specially for parent who want to have both done. These packages are discounted from what it would normally cost to have two separate photo shoots done, it is also nice to have the same photographer for both shoots so that the photos are constant.

Baby Photographer – Infants and Newborn Picture Tips

When you shoot down low at the baby’s level, you are bringing the viewer into the baby’s world vs.. standing over the baby and looking down on it.
