Choosing a Good Portrait Photographer

So you need to get the family photographed, here are a few key facts to help you choose some of the best portrait photographers for your family. It can be difficult as when you search online there are hundreds of family photographers out there all wanting to attract your attention. My first piece of advice would be to choose a couple of photographers who are local to you and simply give them a call.

You will know in the first few minutes if you have a photographer who is used to booking in families and children, they will ask about your children and their ages and sleeping patterns in order too choose the best time for them. Advice will be offered on what to wear and what you should and should not say to the children to make the session successful. Once you have found the photographer you want to use, ask some friends or colleagues if they have used this company/photographer before to get some feedback.

Before you book in ask a few questions about pricing and products, you more often than not get what you pay for, try to see this as an investment for your family as after all this is a lifetime purchase so don’t be looking for the cheapest option as you will be disappointed.

So you are all ready, you go to the studio or location, the session is brilliant and you can not wait to see the finished result. An appointment is usually made at this stage to invite you to see the previews, also this is a good time to just to have another look at the products on offer so you can begin to plan where to hang your amazing new portraits.

I find some of the best photographers will like to show you the previews instead of a sales person, again another key point as sometimes you can be overwhelmed with the choosing your images and knowing how best to display them. Your photographer will be able to guide you with professional display advice even down to the framing style.

Having your family portraits taken should be an enjoyable experience, young children love looking at themselves in pictures especially with Mummy or Daddy, so if you have been putting it off, just do it pick up the phone and get booked in!

When my daughter was born I suddenly became aware of a common problem, was it just me or was I the only apparent lazy father in the world! There I was taking loads of pictures on my compact digital and on my iPhone, pleased with myself with a mass catalogue of Daisy's precious first few weeks. I would often sit down and look through the files on the camera and phone, seeing how much she had changed. It was only a few weeks later that I became public enemy number one in the household. One day as I was again browsing through the images, my lovely wife mentioned in passing, "it's about time we had some of those printed for the album", I just nodded or made a noise to what she had said. I sat and thought about this for a few seconds and thought to myself, I must choose the best ones to print off as it will of course be cheaper and why do we need all the funny looking ones!

Professional Baby Photography, Why Bother?

I am a pro photographer, I take portraits of babies on a daily basis, and often explain the importance of having some professional baby photography.

When my daughter was born I suddenly became aware of a common problem, was it just me or was I the only apparent lazy father in the world! There I was taking loads of pictures on my compact digital and on my iPhone, pleased with myself with a mass catalogue of Daisy’s precious first few weeks. I would often sit down and look through the files on the camera and phone, seeing how much she had changed. It was only a few weeks later that I became public enemy number one in the household. One day as I was again browsing through the images, my lovely wife mentioned in passing, “it’s about time we had some of those printed for the album”, I just nodded or made a noise to what she had said. I sat and thought about this for a few seconds and thought to myself, I must choose the best ones to print off as it will of course be cheaper and why do we need all the funny looking ones! This is when it all started…

The general banter went on for a few more weeks, about when I was going to get the images printed, when we were going to sit down and choose the ones we wanted, you get the general idea. A year passed I kid you not, till one day I walked into the photography processing shop and handed the assistant the memory card. I was asked if I wanted to select which ones I wanted printed, I shouted “all of them, just print the lot!” A couple of days past and off I went to collect the images, I got home, we poured a glass of wine and looked through the photographs together, not on a computer, iphone or digital camera just the old fashioned way and it was brilliant funny ones and all!

So enough ranting from me, but here is a little advice. If someone suggests to you to have some professional baby photographs taken, do it, do not hesitate just pay for the experience and in a few weeks time you will have some stunning images of your baby that will last forever, you will be happy, your family will be happy, the whole world will be happy!

***

Capturing the perfect picture of a baby can be a challenging but rewarding task. Baby photography is often lumped under the classification of children’s photography, but baby photography is an entirely different animal altogether. Children are generally easier to work with as they can be instructed, but a small baby (which for purposes of this article we will define as under one year old) has a mind of its own.

As with children’s photography, it is important to understand the development stage the baby is at in order to get the best smiles. The following are some tips for taking great pictures of babies at varies stages of development.

Up to Ten Weeks: At this stage there isn’t a whole lot the baby can do but lie in a prone position. Compared to later stages, the baby is not too active at this point, so as long as the baby isn’t fussy, pictures are fairly easy. Try laying the baby on its back and focusing the camera at the baby’s head.

Four to Six Months: Now the baby can hold her head up, lie on her tummy, and prop her head up. The baby will watch and follow objects, reach for objects and grab. At this stage try placing the baby on her tummy, drag a toy in front of her to catch her attention, and pull it back to the camera. The baby’s eyes should follow it and she will be looking straight at the camera when you snap the picture. The baby’s lips are very sensitive and you can sometimes induce a smile by tickling the baby’s lips with a small soft toy or tissue.

Six to Nine Months: Baby is now very alert and notices everything around her. She can typically sit up, craw and even pull herself up to a standing position holding on to objects such as a chair. At this stage the baby may respond to a gentle tickle which can be used to product a quick smile. However, you need to be fast because the laugh will be very short lived. You also need to be quick with the entire photo session as the baby’s mood can change rapidly. A six to nine month old can be happy one minute and crying the next.

Nine Months to a Year: At this stage the baby responds very well to just about everything. However, with teeth coming in she can have periods of irritability that can’t be resolved. She will also demand constant attention and the need to be entertained every waking minute. This entertainment can come from you or from a toy. Try playing peek-a-boo around the camera. Imitate the child’s vocal sounds. Give her a prop to hold or play with. At least one of these methods is more likely than not to product a joyful smile.

One year to Eighteen Months: At this stage the line between baby photography and children’s photography starts to blur. The baby will easily play with you at this stage. This means throwing ball, swinging an object, climbing on just about everything. At this stage some babies will also be shy with strangers so you may need the mothers help more at this stage than any other. Give her a toy to play with and then ask for it back. Try throwing a ball back and forth with the parent. Use a long feather duster to tickle the child and pull it back directly toward the camera.

There cannot be any home without even a single photo put on view. It can be a snapshot of a family member, a scenic backdrop, a family vacation or even just a photo of friends and adored ones. It can be photo shoot of distinctive event, an adored pet or an old relatives group still film.

Like a painting

Canvas on the other hand, has been associated with painting for centuries on end. Just as one thinks of “canvas”, one becomes reminiscent with the thoughts of stunning oil paintings hanging on the walls of art galleries and museums the world over.

Now just imagine: what if you could reassign your pictures to canvas and flaunt them on the walls of your home? Wouldn’t that be a remarkable idea? The checkered texture of the canvas would give the photographs an artistic edge aesthetically far superior to a poster or a print on photographic paper, wouldn’t it?

In the recent past, printing of artwork has taken some giant strides, especially with the development of giclee or high quality ink-jet printing. Spray printers are another printing system that is used.

The decree of photographs has improved significantly with the advent of digital photography and use of various computer softwares. Similarly enhanced technologies in the area of digital printing in the form of soaring quality have amplified its scope. The images are color corrected, resized given the desired effect, and made ready to print.

Printing on canvas augments technological changes to convey remarkable results. It is possible to now get larger pictures from normal prints. High decree of quality ink-sets, established on either dyestuffs or pigment are used to print images on canvas.

Once the printing is over, it is coated with a finishing material to make it more light-fast and scratch proof. The canvas is subtly extended around a wooden frame. The finished product looks just like a frame mounted painting on canvas.

Media

Canvas photo printers choose from a variety of canvas fabrics as the substrate. The paramount feature is 100% cotton. The finished print includes matte, glossy, and waterproof. One has the option to choose effectively any size starting with even a 60″ wide canvas based on ones liking and resources, to print a desired snap.

Advantages

Affordable

For an art form so striking in its impact, canvas photo prints are surprisingly reasonably priced. For many of them, even the idea of an imitation painting might seem quite luxurious, leave alone a painting by a well known artist. Canvas photo engraves present an economical substitute for those who are rapt by fine arts.

More expensive

While canvas prints invariably look better, they do cost more than prints on photographic paper. The reason for the same being the high extent of dexterity needed at every stage of production. However, a lot of general public is prepared to pay a premium for their distinctive appearance, and the price is getting cheaper with more printers coming into the market.

Less commonly found

You cannot find a canvas printer as often as you can find a photo printer. Online canvas printing options are a way of getting around this shortcoming.

Conclusion

Overall you can safely say that canvas photo prints are a vast improvement in the photo printing scenario. Considering the beauty and impact of the final product, it is good value for money and is a development that is here to stay.

Children Portrait

*

Over the past several years the children’s photography business has morphed into something quite different than what most adults remember from when they were children themselves. Those of us raised in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and even 90’s more likely than not remember sitting feet crossed, chin up, back straight at a photography studio in a local mall or strip mall. We smiled as the photographer asked us to say “cheese” and the lights flashed.

Child photography isn’t like that anymore. Yes, the same scene still plays out every day in malls and studios all across the country, but to a much lesser extent than it once did. Today parents are looking to capture their child’s personality. They want pictures of their children playing at a park, rolling in the grass, dipping their toes in a small stream. Sitting in front of a backdrop doesn’t accomplish this. As a result, children’s photography has taken to the street, or more accurately the park, so to speak. Children photographer often have an inventory of their favorite locations they can draw upon and suggest to a client depending on the desired setting.

Evidence of this shift can be seen in the recent bankruptcy of Kiddie Kandids. With studio locations in more than 200 malls across the country Kiddie Kandids was one of the nation’s largest photography chains. However, unable to provide an on location photography service, the company failed to keep up with the changing trend and filed for bankruptcy in January of 2010.

With the availability of digital cameras it has also become much easier for entrepreneurs to start their own children’s photography business. There is still the same required skill involved in taking a good picture, but no longer is a dark room necessary for photo processing. It’s also much easier to take tons of photos and then edit them in Photoshop or other photo editing software. With film, getting the perfect picture with as few shots as possible was important, and a studio setting provided for a controlled environment that made this easier. Today child photographers will often take hundreds of pictures in a single session and then edit the best ones. Because the number of pictures taken is greater, it is much easier to get a larger number of high quality portraits.

Children’s photography will no doubt continue to evolve. However, the new direction is not one of sitting up straight with a fake smile, it’s one of real smiles and sitting any way the child wants.

It is difficult to find a home where there isn’t a single photograph on display. It can be snaps of a family member; a beautiful landscape; some landmark you visited with your family on a vacation; or photos of your friends and dear ones. It can be the photograph of a special occasion, a much-loved pet or even an old family photograph.

People use photographs to adorn not only their homes, but also as items of office décor. Purposes vary from the decorative to advertising to the inspirational, to go with the ambience of the workplace.

Like a painting

Canvas on the other hand, has been associated with painting for centuries on end. Just say “canvas” and the first things that come to mind are gorgeous oil paintings hanging from the walls in art galleries and museums the world over.

Now just think: what if you could transfer your photographs to canvas and display them on the walls of your home? Wouldn’t that be a great idea? The checkered texture of the canvas would give the photographs an artistic edge aesthetically far superior to a poster or a print on photographic paper, wouldn’t it?

High on elegance

Welcome to the world of photos on canvas! It’s a realm of old world charm, fine craftsmanship and easy elegance. Just like an original oil painting, a photo printed on canvas soothes your mind when you look at it.

No wonder, canvas prints of photographs are a rage. It’s driven by a comparatively new technology, and is adorning the homes of art lovers across the world. High quality canvas prints of original artwork can be the nearest to the real thing, at a negligible fraction of the price. It has almost the same effect on the viewer, though.

Process

In the recent past, printing of artwork has taken some giant strides, especially with the development of giclée or high quality inkjet printing. Dye sublimation printers are another printing technique that is used.

Greater capabilities in digital photography and computer software have helped in increasing the resolution of photographs. At the same time, superior technologies in the field of digital printing in the form of high quality large format printers have widened its scope. The images are color corrected, resized, given the desired effect, and made ready to print.

Printing on canvas uses these technological enhancements to deliver stunning results. Much bigger enlargements are now possible from normal prints. High fidelity archival quality ink-sets, based either on dyestuffs or pigments, are used to print images on canvas.

Once the printing is over, it is coated with a finishing material to make it more lightfast and scratchproof. Then the canvas is stretched around a wooden frame. The finished product looks just like a frame mounted painting on canvas.

Media

Canvas photo printers choose from a variety of canvas fabrics as the substrate. The best quality is 100% cotton. Finishes include matte, glossy, and waterproof. Depending on your preference and your budget you can choose virtually any size of canvas, even 60″ wide, for printing your favorite photograph.

Advantages

Affordable For an art form so striking in its impact, canvas photo prints are surprisingly reasonably priced. For most people, even a replica of an original painting might be quite expensive, let alone a painting by a well known artist. Canvas photo prints offer an inexpensive alternative for those who are fascinated by art.

Moreover, canvas photo printing lets you give the oil painting look to your favorite photographs, those that have a special significance to you.

Widely available – even online Though quite exotic, you don’t have to go to an art gallery to get your photos printed on canvas. Already there are a large number of canvas print makers across the world. If by chance there isn’t one in your city or town, you always have the option of ordering a canvas photo print online.

All you have to do is to upload your reasonable quality photographs to the portal of such a service provider. The printer will do everything, including dispatch of the print to your address.

Different formats Canvas photo prints can be made from almost any format. It could be from your old family photograph, your child’s drawing, from old negatives or slides – virtually from anything that can be photographed or scanned.

Great as gifts Canvas photo prints are a great option for gifting to people you care about. It fits into almost any occasion – birthdays, anniversaries, housewarming, and so on. The fact that it can be personalized only adds to its suitability as a gift item.

Flexibility Because canvas photo printing is based on digital technology, it can use a wide array of software to give the exact look and size that you want. Your photos can be enlarged, combined, given special effects, color enhanced and so on just like digital photo prints using pro-level image editing software.

For example, you might want your childhood photograph from the old family album to have a sepia tone for the old look. The effect would look stunning in a canvas print.

No glare Canvas prints do not have to be framed and covered with a glass sheet. So the view is not obstructed by light reflection from the glass in a brightly lit room. No glass also means there’s a lower risk of breakage and damage to the print.

Long life Canvas prints have a far greater life span than photographic paper or other substrates.

Flipside Canvas photo prints are a great way to print your photographs. And like all things great, they have a few drawbacks too.

More expensive While canvas prints invariably look better, they do cost more than prints on photographic paper. This is because of the high level of skill required at every stage of their production. However, people are generally willing to pay a premium for their unique appearance, and the price difference is slowly getting reduced as more and more printers enter the market.

Less commonly found You cannot find a canvas printer as often as you can find a photo printer. Online canvas printing options are a way of getting around this shortcoming.

Conclusion Overall you can safely say that canvas photo prints are a vast improvement in the photo printing scenario. Considering the beauty and impact of the final product, it is good value for money and is a development that is here to stay.

Christmas is an amazing time of year! So much color, so much fun and so many treasured moments! Here are a few Christmas Photography Tips that will help you take memorable photos this holiday season with your digital camera.

Tip #1 – Make sure you have plenty of supplies

If you forget to have plenty of batteries and memory cards available, you may miss that precious shot of the delight on your loved one’s face when they open that special present.

Tip #2 – Get up close and personal

Fill your viewfinder or viewing screen with the subject to capture their expressions. You can capture amazing photos when you time your shots and snap that photo when they aren’t looking at the camera. Don’t forget to take those ‘traditional’ group shots of your family and friends.

Tip #3 – Use different angles

Have some fun and get interesting shots by getting on a chair and shooting down. Kneeling or laying down on your stomach can make your shots more dynamic and personal. Getting eye level with your subjects will also produce great shots.

Tip #4 – Using the camera flash

Most digital cameras have a zoom feature. Use this to your advantage when you are using the camera’s flash. Get as far from your subject as possible, then zoom in and take your shot. The extra distance you put between you and your subject will soften the sometimes harsh white flash. You can also diffuse the light by taping a tissue or some other opaque material to the pop-up flash. How about getting creative and attach a colored piece of transparent plastic over the flash. You may end up taking a shot of your very own Blue Christmas!

Tip #5 – Photograph the Christmas frills

Don’t forget to take photos of lights, decorations and the tree. A close-up shot of that treasured ornament will preserve that memory for you for a life-time. You will be amazed how shooting different aspects of Christmas will enhance your photo album for years to come.

Tip #6 – Fixing red-eye

When using the flash we sometimes get these bright red reflections in our subject’s eyes. With most cameras there is a red eye removal feature. Make yourself familiar with using it by reading your owners’ manual. There are also many other free photo editing software programs available to help you adjust your photos and remove red-eye.

Tip #7 – Take Outside shots

You can get some great shots outside at Christmas, but you might tend to think you don’t need your flash. Oftentimes, the faces of the people in the photo are dark while the background lighting is bright. Turning your flash on and using it will help to light up their faces.

Tip #8 – Take lots of shots

With the digital cameras and memory cards we have available now, it is a very worthwhile practice to take a ton of shots. You don’t have to waste your money or get disappointed because half of the shots you took with your film camera were not good. Simply delete the bad, print the good!

Tip #9 – Have fun

There is so much to see and do at Christmas; so many ways to capture the warmth, fun and excitement. It’s a wonderful time to experiment with your camera so go out there and capture the moments! You have the opportunity to make a treasured memory with one click of your shutter.

Use these simple tips this holiday season to help capture those precious memories that will last a life time.

Child Portrait and Baby Photographer

Most baby portraits are taken when the baby is very young. Children photographers must keep in mind that the baby should be on their stomachs with holding their heads up strongly. Some babies can perform this task earlier than three months. Each baby is an individual so do not fret. This is also a great time when a baby will not cooperate with cloth changes.

You can try laying the baby on their tummy and when they raise their head, you can snap the baby portrait. Children photographers tend to use black and white for these baby portraits, which give the portraits a classic look.

At six months of age, this will increase a children photographers options with posing and baby portraits. This is a wonderful time for children photographers to photograph with cute props or even a special chair. The expressions for these baby portraits are truly priceless.

Nine months of age, the babies will be teething as well as drooling a lot. Make sure you keep drool rags in a location, which is easy to access and quickly. Children at this age also experience anxiety when separated from their parents.

Children photographers must show patience to capture these particular stages in a baby portrait. You can try shooting the child standing up and without shoes, which make for adorable baby portraits most parents will love.

Twelve months of age, the baby will be standing up more times to none by themselves. Make sure you advise the parents to have shoes on the baby for the baby portrait. The shoes should be clean. Children photographers usually engage the child while taking the baby portrait pictures. The child will more than likely not be looking at the camera and this is ok. This will provide an arena for very natural poses while catching the child’s personality in the baby portrait.

It is very important to document the baby’s stages during the first year of life, whether by the parents or professional children photographer performing the baby portrait. This is something that is monumental and will never be able to be captured again.

Use the most natural lighting as possible. You do not want red-eye to be popping up in the baby portraits. Move in close and be quick about it. A good children photographer wants to catch those timeless expressions. Photograph outdoors is you need to while avoiding the sunlight. Do not ever face a child with the sun in their eyes; this will cause them to squint.

Outdoors is the Way to Go For Senior Portraits in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Oahu alone has amazing beaches, swaying palm trees, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and the towering Ko’olau mountains. The Big Island of Hawaii has an active volcano, a snow-capped mountain with a world-class observatory and cattle ranches. Each of the other Hawaiian Islands – Maui, Kauai, Lanai and Molokai – also have their unique natural beauty. So, why is it that most high school students who vacation in Hawaii don’t think about having their senior pictures taken here? Probably because all their classmates have their senior pictures taken with the school photographer back home.

The few students who break the mould are richly rewarded with unique senior portraits that can only be taken in Hawaii. Below are some great outdoor locations for student photos in Hawaii.

The Beach
It would be remiss not to mention the most popular location for portrait photography in Hawaii. There are golden sand beaches, black sand beaches (Big Island of Hawaii), beaches with lava rocks around – the list is endless.

Botanical Garden
If you’re a plant lover or would like a lush green background in your photos, consider a visit to a botanical garden.

Rainforest and Waterfall
Photos in a rainforest usually involves taking a hike. Several rainforest hikes do have waterfalls at the end of the trail but it may not be practical to take several outfits and hike through the mud. However, most local photographers will know of areas that have a rainforest feel sans the hike. There are also manmade waterfalls that can be easily accessed.

Orchid or Tropical Flower Farm
You will need to get permission to shoot at an orchid or flower farm, but most places will grant permission if you offer to buy a plant (yes, they can package orchids for air travel) and explain that the photos are for your personal use and not for commercial purposes. If you like a very colorful background, orchid and flower farms are good locations for your senior pictures.

Your hotel grounds
Most of the higher-end hotels have beautifully landscaped areas that are great locations for photography. Unfortunately, some of these hotels charge a ridiculously high photo fee even if the guest’s pictures are for their personal use. Your best bet is to call the hotel’s guest services director and ask him or her to waive the fee. Insist on using the photographer of your choice and not the expensive hotel photographer who takes boring pictures. If they refuse, say that you will stay at another hotel that is more accommodating. Chances are, they will waive the fee because hotels need to fill up their rooms.

Horse Ranch
If you love riding, consider taking your senior photos at a horse ranch or riding school. This will also require obtaining permission ahead of time.

Chinatown or some other bustling street in Honolulu
If you want to throw in some culture into your shoot, take a stroll down Honolulu’s Chinatown area on a Sunday morning. Bustling markets selling fresh fruits and vegetables amidst the historical buildings of Oahu’s downtown makes for a funky backdrop to your senior pictures.

Some senior portrait photographers, including myself, will allow pictures with family members, siblings or friends with some of the extended packages. Photo books, slide shows and canvas prints are also offered as add-ons with your outdoor senior portrait packages. These are all well worth considering as they will be a wonderful souvenir of your trip to Hawaii.
